We took the dogs for a walk this afternoon, the first time we’ve felt inclined to do so since the snow arrived. Thankfully we were able to get to my parents which meant that we could easily and safely let them off the leads. Of course, it almost meant that I was able to take a few more photos!

I took about 20 photos in all and have uploaded the best (8 in all I think) to my January 2010 Snow Photobucket album

Just a couple of photos that I took at Sopley Mill on Saturday. Slightly different from my usual style, the mill wheels had the saturation upped to give the colour (it was a really flat day as far as light was concerned) and the contrast upped too which brought the blacks into line.

The decanters were sat on the serving bench and lit from a halogen spotlight mounted on a beam. Again the saturation was “upped” to put the colour back into the liquids.

I also shot a wedding at the mill and hope to get some photos from that online soon (as soon as the bride and groom have seen them!)

What do you reckon?

I wish, just occasionally that I could put emphasis in the blog title.

I want to be this good!

One of the testamonials from a wedding photographer friend‘s site:

“We first discovered Rob’s work at Darryl and Siobhan’s wedding, when a selection from the day were shown in the evening, for once we were speechless, the images blew us away, they were so unusual. All too often one wedding looks exactly the same as the next, with hours of stiff, boring photo calls to match. Rob captures the atmosphere and emotion of the occasion beautifully, his attention to detail is unique and his relaxed, honest, candid style suited us perfectly……he wasn’t available on our original wedding date, so we changed it and you can see why!” – Cheryl and Pascal

Bride and Groom changing their wedding date so they could have the photographer? Unheard of. A real testament to the photographer’s skills.

I am so jealous. Please, go look at his photos. You will see why they changed the date.

HDR – High Dynamic Range is a technique emplyed by some photographers to try to re-create more accurately in a photograph what the real life subject would look like. Personally I am not a fan.

Occasionally I see it used to good effect and start to wonder about it, then see it used to its worst effect and remember why I have never tried it.

Daze has used it to great effect in some of his car images (check his Flickr set) and then we get to see things like this where the “photographer” has employed the technique just because he can. It’s more like a novelty.

Which is exactly what Jim over at JMG Galleries thinks.

The next reason why I hate HDR photography is that most people doing it approach its use as a novelty rather than an applied solution. In the process most images are completely butchered. This is most especially true of landscape and nature photographs. Much can be said for artistic style and there are a few photographers out there that have used HDR processed files rather creatively, but by and large most photographers are using HDR as a “gee whiz neat” function that does nothing other than create throw away images worthy neither of repeat viewing or print.

Jim goes on to suggest some alternatives to using HDR which are very valid and useful techniques to learn anyway. If you do nothing else, then go and read that post.

I would then suggest that you have a look at some of his photos and subscribe to his RSS feed. You won’t regret it!
