BBC News is today reporting that Microsoft demoed “touch Windows” at a recent conference.

According to the report, the new version has the tag “Windows 7″. I don’t know whether it’s Microsoft or BBC that’s created this title, but it’s wrong.

Starting with the earliest “big business” version and looking at only the mainstream releases[1. not counting MCE and similar.], we have Windows 3 and 3.11 (Workgroups). Then there was Windows ’95 (version 4), then ’98 (version 5). Following that was Windows ’98 (and version ’98b) for version 6 and Windows ME makes version 7. So, Windows XP is version 8 and Vista version 9.

This would, surely, makes the latest incarnation after Vista at least version 10? Even with Microsoft/BBC ignoring ME and Vista for the utter shit that they were, it would still make “touch Windows” version 8.

This paragraph in the report made me laugh:

Mr Gates, who will remain as chairman of Microsoft, said he would still have an office in Redmond and spend time writing, thinking and working on a variety of pet projects including the next generation Microsoft Office.

Rather than working on “Pet Projects” (Office a pet project now???) perhaps he should be spending time teaching his marketing people to count…

Why anybody would want to install Safari (Apple’s web-browser, much like Internet Explorer is Microsoft’s) on a Windows PC is beyond me. Safari sucks even more than IE.

However, The Register has reported today that the End User Licence Agreement (EULA) for Safari has a clause forbidding the installation on Windows:

As spotted by our Italian friends at setteB.IT, Apple’s Safari license says that users are permitted to install the browser on no more than “a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.” This means that if you install Safari for Windows on a Windows PC, you’re violating the license.

The problem? You’d think there wasn’t one right? Well, apparently the Safari browser is being pushed out as part of the Apple Updater which you’ll see if you use iTunes.

Early last week, as Apple unveiled Safari version 3.1, it began offering the browser to Windows users via the Apple Software Update tool that accompanies iTunes and Quicktime. In other words, millions of people who don’t use Safari have now been confronted with a pop-up window that lists the browser as an important software “update.”

And this is an offer that many iTunes and Quicktime users are less than likely to refuse. When that pop-up window pops up, the go-ahead-and-install-Safari button is checked by default.

So, if you use iTunes and you see the Apple Updater service, make sure you inspect it carefully and untick Safari if it’s there.

Then dump Internet Explorer 6 and 7. You can’t uninstall them as Microsoft uses sections of them for shared functionality, just stop using them.

Then go get Firefox. It’s secure, standards compliant and extendable for functionality, unlike Safari or IE.

StumbleUpon has lots to answer for. I have spent the last two hours just pressing the Stumble button and seeing what came up. Here you will be able to see the pages that I really liked. It’s a great way to quickly store the pages for future reference.

Photosynth however has me absolutely stunned. Found via StumbleUpon and Crazyleaf Design, the easiest way to describe it is to let you watch the video I watched:

How cool is that? Crazyleaf Design also provided a few links:

The Microsoft Research Website

There is also a live preview of this software available online. All you need to do is install a 5.5 MB Photosynth ActiveX. The address is : http://labs.live.com/photosynth/

Do not adjust your monitor or browser. Those links above really do go to Microsoft!
