Failed Logins – A Record

Me: Good morning, IS Helpdesk, how can I help?
User: Um, I think I locked my account out.
Me: OK, lets take a few details and have a look.

*takes the user’s details, logs the call and looks at the user’s account.

Me: Yep, you’ve definitely locked the account out. Um, bloody hell!
User: Have I got a problem?
Me: Yep, 694 failed logins!!
User: Ok, I’ll go have a word with my problem in a minute. He’s in trouble anyway…

I shit you not:

Sigh…

Yes, I did remove the personal information from the image!

My Now Customary Monthly post

I know, I know, I should be posting more regularly so I can keep both my readers updated with the boring bits of my life, I am sorry. Life gets in the way. August in a nutshell (well, bullet points):

  • Norjam was OK.  Not great for us leaders but I am fairly certain the Scouts enjoyed it.
  • The week after Norjam was not so good.  I can’t and won’t talk about it.
  • I found 3 geocaches in the whole month.  That’s not good!
  • One of my Travel Bugs was handed to me at Norjam having been to Scotland and back.  That was awesome!
  • Got an awesome gaming chair for my birthday.  Spent far too much time (think 26 – 28 hours) since the middle of the month in front of the TV playing Call Of Duty and Colin McRae Dirt 2…
  • Missed recording the podcast.  See point 2.  It will be recorded this week for release probably 7 September.
  • Attended Mini In The Park and stayed at a small hotel in Milton Ernest. Superb weekend away from all the standard life crap. Report and photos from the trip to MITP at Mini Mini Mini

I will post more soon.  12 of 12 next month is on a Sunday and the intention is to go Geocaching, a long walk and document the day.

Playing with Smartphone QR Codes

With the advent of the Smartphone there has, inevitably been an explosion of applications that can read the barcodes that you find on the packaging for almost any product that is on sale. Fantastic, but a limited and nerdy use for the individual unless you collect barcode details or want to check the online price for the Chicken Tikka Masala jar that you just emptied into the saucepan.

Well mucking around on the ‘nets the other day I came across a slightly different implementation of the barcode. It’s called a QR or Quick Reference code. Here’s one:

Looks strange huh?! This is actually a QR Code that was used in the film District 9.

To read these, obviously, you’ll need to have a QR Reader. If you want to go find one for your device I would suggest BeeTagg Pro (my preferred) or i-nigma. Both are available for iPhone (in the AppStore) and Android phones, I don’t know about Blackberry. Both the apps a free. I’ll go into more detail about these apps in a mo.

It’s ok if you want to go download an app and try the QR code above. You should be able to scan them straight off your screen (unless you’re reading this on the smartphone…) I’ll wait!

If you don’t have a smartphone (awe, poor baby!) or can’t be bothered to install one right now, got to http://zxing.org/w/decode.jspx and in the box put in

http://i305.photobucket.com/albums/nn239/collinfrench/district-9-qr-code-example-1.jpg

which is the direct link to the above image. You’ll need to grab the “parsed code” from the result page and paste it in a browser address bar…

OK, played? Liked it? Yeah, me too! All sorts of thoughts are spinning right now! Try this QR code which I produced at http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/

This one is a text file with information about a Geocaching event in Titchfield in September.

Seeing the possibilities yet? Business cards with your information embedded? T-Shirts with a really rude message? What about stickers with a website link? Any other ideas?

These QR codes have been extremely popular in Japan but so far have been relatively unknown in the UK and Europe. They are becoming more popular though.

That image above brings me to the apps themselves. I mentioned BeeTagg Pro and i-nigma earlier. There are others out there, but these are the two that I tested (‘cos they is free right!). Each has its good points and each has issues.

First up, BeeTagg Pro. It’s a little slow to start, the imaging window (below left) is a little fussy on “seeing” the QR image and there’s no way to stop a recognised scan from going straight to a web address. BeeTagg Pro (certainly on the iPhone) uses a built-in browser rather than going straight to Safari. That’s not great as you don’t know where the web address might take you. Viagra anyone???

That said, the information displayed from a text based QR code is fab! Take a look at the information in the image above right. This is all information that is embedded in the QR code image further up the post.

So, i-nigma.

Much quicker to start and much much quicker at reading the image. I had to try 4 times before I got the image on the left, it’s that fast at reading the image. i-nigma also gives you the option to go online, rather than taking you directly to the URL. However, there’s a huge problem with i-nigma. I scanned the same QR Image with both BeeTagg Pro and i-nigma. The image on the right below shows the output from i-nigma:

That’s no so good is it?! The app has only outputted the link and has ignored all the rest of the information. So, Bee Tagg Pro it is for me!

Just before I end this post (that is much longer than I first intended!) I am thinking of creating a geocaching “multi-cache” using QR code images for stages of the mutli-cache. Of course, I would have to provide ordinary clues to get it past the Geocaching.com reviewers, but I see no reason why this shouldn’t work.

Oh, just one more image for you to scan:

Playing The Waiting Game

Having spent 14 or so months with my sole transportation method being cars, either the Clubman, the Astra or most recently my Dad’s Mini Cooper (thanks Dad!) we decided that the cheapest method to get me back on the road in transport that we own would be to put Rach’s bike back on the road.

Between us we have two classic Minis, a Vauxhall Astra and two motobikes – my Suzuki GSX750-F (aka the Teapot) and Rach’s GS125-E.

When I originally spoke to a motorcycle MoT station they reckoned that it would be approximately £300 – £350 to recommission and MoT the bike with it having been off the road for 13 months. They also reckoned that it would cost a third of that price to re-commission Rach’s 125 at approximately £130.

Fabulous we thought! Last Monday I phoned Barney’s Superbike Services, spoke to Barney (a great bloke by the way!) and booked the bike in. Barney picked the bike up on Thursday saying “I’ll try to have it done by the weekend…” Famous last words eh!

I sorted out the insurance this morning and then gave Barney a call to find out how it was going the news wasn’t so good.

Barney reckons that he’s got the bike running (wahey!), but the front fork seals are weeping (which I kinda knew anyway). The most worrying part so far is that Barney reckons the rear swingarm has got salt in it at some point and where it’s been off the road so long it’s corroded to excess. He needs to strip the back end of the bike and remove the swingarm. Hopefully he will be able to weld the swingarm, but if not it’s a new one. Eeek! These costs are starting to mount and on a bike that realistically is only worth about £400 I can’t help but wonder if it’s worth the money.

Ho hum, I can’t stop him now, it’s Saturday afternoon and he’s closed. He says he’ll give me a call on Monday and let me know the situation. I sure hope it’s good news as I’m desperate to ride a bike again!!!

Found A Geocoin…

Preparing for a trip to London today to see Legally Blonde this evening I was digging through my geocaching bag trying to find a couple of bits when I found this handsome fella.

It is a Mimbres 3.0 Yellow Geocoin and apparently something to do with the Mimbres Pottery of The American Southwest.

Apparently I had grabbed it while walking round the UK Mega Series back in April, dropped it into my bag and then completely forgotten about it.

I have now “grabbed” the coin from the cache and I was going to drop it into a cache in London. Unfortunately that would be completely pointless as the mission for the coin is to get to one of three caches in Llanberis, North Wales. Oh well, looks like I will have to head North West of home to do some caching…

On another note, the new Geocaching iPhone app V4 was released yesterday. Apart from a minor (!) issue with the iPhone 3G where the app crashes when trying to download PQs, the app seems to be faster, has some nice touches, the ability to log trackables and a few bug fixes.

I’m going to leave the eTrex GPS at home today and try it out. I’ll let y’all know how I get on soon…
