New Host Time
So, with thanks to Wolfie, Andy C and Daze for commenting on my last post about finding a new host I have made the decision and taken the plunge.
So, who did I decide? Well, actually I went with A Small Orange, as I mentioned I was looking at in my last post. I did look carefully at the others and while they are probably decent hosts in themselves, there were a number of reasons why I didn’t take them:
Daze recommended both Clook and Just Host and while Clook were just expensive (compared to ASO), visiting the homepage of Just Host rang a huge alarm bell with me. I had been reading How To Choose A Webhost over at Daily Blog Tips and tip number 3 stated “Stay Away from Oversellers”:
3. Stay away from oversellers: it is very tempting to sign up with a web host that offers many Gigabytes of disk space, Terabytes of monthly bandwidth and unlimited domains. Specially if they charge $5,95 monthly for those specifications The only problem is that those hosting providers are clearly overselling, and thus they are not able to guarantee service quality. When choosing a web host look for a company that offers reasonable specifications.
Take a look at the homepage for Just Host and see the big red diagonal banner on the right. No thanks. For that matter, Daily Blog Tips recommends Doreo Hosting and a quick look at their Shared hosting suggests 2gb of space and 60gb bandwidth for 6.99 (presumably a month and presumably dollars – they don’t state either), both of which ticked boxes on the overseller watchlist.
I didn’t go with Hosting Unlimited purely for the fact that ASO limits only the web space and bandwidth. The add-on domains, sub-domains, MySQL databases and anything else that doesn’t require a physical limit isn’t physically limited. This means that I can have one database per WordPress/Joomla!/Habari install rather than having to worry about what I will kill if I drop a DB.
So, probability is that I will move the domain and databases etc within a few days. I might even start off with Habari on this domain – assuming that I can import the WordPress posts with little trouble! Wish me luck!
