Personal Projects

Last Sunday I finished my 12 month “stint” as Chairman of Portsmouth and Southampton Mini Owners’ Club.

The club has existed for seven years and I have contributed to the running of the club in some form for six of those years. I started with the magazine production and secretary’s roles (4 years!), events, general dogs body and then Chairman for the last 12 months.

I decided a couple of weeks ago that I wanted to take one complete year off from running the club and have resigned completely from the committee. I tell you, it’s such a relief! I have these sudden thoughts, and the one that follows is always “it’s not my problem!”. Actually, it is my problem. However, it’s only my problem in that I need to tell a committee member about it so they can act (or not) on it. I don’t need to lose sleep any more worrying about how we fix that problem. Yes, I lost sleep over the bloody Mini Club!

I am not completely out of it though. I am organising (along with a few others) Minis In The Trenches (MITTS). 16 – 19 October 2008 we will be taking approximately 20 cars (40 people) across to Lille on the French/Belgian border to visit the WW1 memorials, museums and battlefields.

This is where my projects come in. I have created the MITTS website as a sub domain of miniminimini.com. I am currently trying to get my head round Joomla! which is a supposedly awesome Content Management System.

I have a couple of issues with it so far:

  1. Why does the install package have to be so bloody big? I have had to upload 10mb of config files. That’s before I even start creating content.
  2. One of the things I love about WordPress is its simplicity. It’s obvious to most people how it works. Joomla! is a nightmare of menus, sub-menus and sub-sub-menus.

I’ll keep persevering with it for the moment as I really want to learn a dedicated CMS rather than using WP (primarily a blogging tool as the CMS).

I’ll let y’all know how I’m getting on, although you can always just look at the MITTS website!

On a side (but related) note, WordPress have just released the first release candidate (RC1) for version 2.5 of the application. I am hoping to get that installed and have a play in the next few days. This is a major update to the application and if you’re still running version 2.1 or 2.2 (as I know some people are!) then this could be considered a mandatory upgrade, not just for features but security too.
