Now That’s Excursion

Excursion (aka XMax in Thiele/Small Parameters) in speaker terms is how much the subwoofer moves in/out when it is playing a note.

This video is of the Elemental Designs 13AV.2 12″ Subwoofer. I tried embedding the vid but it seriously screwed with the layout. You’ll have to click to watch it. Sorry!

It is a bloody monster! The XMax given for this subwoofer is 28.75 physical linear millimetres. Yes, 2.85 centimetres. Let’s put that in perspective. I have just bought:

  1. Two Elemental Designs 7kv.2 6″ subs. They fit beautifully under the rear seat in the Mini. Their XMax is given as 1.3cm.
  2. Two ED EHQS12s. I bought them because they were brand new, £9 each. Their XMax is just 9.1mm!

This 13Av.2 is capable of handling 1200 watts RMS in 2 ohm configuration. That’s 10 times the amount I am currently running in the Mini!

    Yup. If it wasn’t so bloody expensive I’d get one (or two) for the back seat of the Mini… ;)
