This is funny but I have a different take on deafness. Beloved’s sister is deaf. She attended a special school for the deaf from kindergarten to grade 12. She can lip read and sign. Knowing Janice changed my whole appreciation about what it would be like to be deaf.
I cannot sign but when we took her to concerts she could “feel” the beat and rhythm of the music. At concerts she would have me silently lip-synch the words so she could read my lips and she had a great time. The best locations for her were the ones with hardwood floors.
The reason she chose me to lip read is because I have a very expressive face and I enunciate words clearly. I also use my hands a lot when I talk. We would often play the music at home first so she could sit on the floor and feel it and have me shape the words for her.
