Chkdsk – Do Not Write It Off!

Mr Soil, A Bugs Life

When I put the SATA HDD into the server and booted it up the system told me that it wanted to do a chkdsk on the F Drive to check for errors. I ignored it and continued booting into XP.

The system saw the partitions and merrily let me copy the data off. I clicked the F Drive and it told me it was corrupt and unreadable. Then I remembered that it wanted to check for errors. Not expecting much from it I rebooted the machine and allowed check disk to run.

Back into XP (still on the server) and through morbid curiosity I clicked the F Drive. Bugger me if there wasn’t the contents of my Main PC’s XP partition.

Keeping fingers crossed and still with a pessimistic attitude I reconnected the HDD to the main PC and booted it. I got got the Safe Mode options screen again. I sighed and chose safe mode. Bugger me again if Windows XP didn’t start into safe mode. Hoo and Yah! Another reboot and this time into full version XP and I sit here now typing this on my main PC while the Server has a video burning to DVD.

Feeling rather lucky (professionalism had nothing to do with it!) I am now going to back up the email folders from the root partition and then figure out a way to create a basic hard disk partition for my Music drive. That way I can just whip the HDD out, throw it in the server and back up about 100 gigs worth of music. :)
