New Canon EOS Announced.
Thanks to Andy at The Lost Outpost I have just found out that there’s a new Canon EOS announced.
The Canon EOS 400d will have new features such as:
The Canon UK Microsite has more information on the camera, but allow me to bitch for a second.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, there’s no pricing announced yet. Rumours on the ‘net suggest around $1000 US. That means it will be around £1000 UKP too. Yup, suck it up Britons, we’re gonna get shafted again.
While the 10.1 megapixel count is great (I think), can someone please go and slap Canon around a bit? I would much prefer eight or even six megapixels on a full frame sensor. The current CMOS units in everything from my 10d to this new 400d still suffer the 1.6x crop factor due to the smaller sensor. The sensor is 22.2 x 14.8mm as opposed to 36×24mm for the full frame. Size comparison is available here.
Just one last “bitch”. Not all of us have little Japanese hands. I used a friend’s 350d the other day and it felt like I was shooting through a matchbox. Please can we have some larger cameras? My 10d, although it is heavy, is a great size and with the battery grip is a great camera to hold.
UPDATE: ePhotozine has a hands-on review of the 400d which suggests that the UK retail value will be £649.99 body only. wait a couple of months and that will be £600, then £550 at most retailers.

As I’ve just commented in reply to your thoughts on my blog, I reckon the size is OK for me, but then I’ve never “stepped down” from the higher-end models. I wonder if a 30D would fit into my Crumpler Ben’s Pizza bag? The 350D fits snugly.
Full-frame sensors sound appealing, except for the fact that the EF-S lenses will end up vignetting… so for now, the smaller sensor is fine with me ;-) although it’s a bit annoying that I don’t get as wide a view as I would on a full-frame camera with my 18-55mm lens.
