Tagging, Keywords and Permalinks

So, Lorelle’s latest challenge is to list the top 10 keywords you think you use on your blog.

As they’re kinda related I’m going to mention my tags and permalinks too.

First off, an apology. If you’ve previously linked to one of my posts (I know the London Underground is fairly popular) the links may not work properly. This is because I have finally got the permalinks right. Permalinks are what you’ll see in the URL bar of your browser when you view a single post, or comments. They used to come out like:

http://www.cornellfinch.com/?p=123.

Not exactly pretty huh! Well now they’ll come out like:

http://www.cornellfinch.com/2006/06/30/my-wife-sucks-balls-msn-search/

Much better, but might break old links.

Second, I have put a tag cloud into a page. A Tag cloud will give keywords on what I gibber and BS about in my posts. I didn’t put it up when I first installed Ultimate Tag Warrior – I couldn’t really see the point. I’ve been tagging posts for about six months (maybe more – can’t remember), the tag cloud looks more interesting and I’ve now put it on its own page.

On that note, back to Lorelle’s weekly task. It’s a two part task this week and part one is

List your top 10 keywords for your blog.

So, in no particular order:

1. WordPress (420)
2. Motorbike (59)
3. Harley Davidson (56)
4. Photography (59)
5. Search (77)
6. Personal (96)
7. Funny (387)
8. Thursday Thirteen (348)
9. WTF (343)
10. Mini (410)

The number in brackets represents the number of results returned by Google searching the keyword in this format:

keyword site:www.cornellfinch.com

Part two of Lorelle’s challenge is to

Clean Up Your List of Top 10 Keywords for Your Blog and Post Them

Hmm, as I don’t really know exactly what all my keywords are, this is gonna be difficult. This is where the tag cloud comes in handy!

Apparently the (Ultimate Tag Warrior) tags I use most (again, no particular order) are:

1. Motorbike
2. Harley
3. Harley+Davidson
4. Bike
5. WordPress
6. Photo
7. Bike
8. PandSMOC (Portsmouth and Southampton Mini Owners’ Club FYI!)
9. Blogging
10. Rant

Differs a little from my “guess” list above, but it’s not far off. I regularly check what people are using to get to my blog from searches, there are some strange, some rude, and just the ordinary ones. WP-Shortstat plugin currently reckons:

  • london underground song 46
  • kidd of speed 19
  • roland rat 18
  • funny shit 15
  • london underground the song 6
  • finch pictures 5
  • london underground songs 5
  • funny songs london underground 5
  • P&SMOC 5
  • finch green 4
  •
I guess from that list that The London Underground Song (requires Flash, speakers and is very NSFW) is by far the most popular. Others I have had include:

  • hairdressers that come to my home in fareham
  • bang my wife in the m***e
  • David Hasselhoff mum and Dad (huh????)
  • my wife sucks balls
  •
Plus a few others that even I won’t write on here!

      So what did you learn?

And I love it that WordPress and WTF are in close keyword competition with each other. ;-)

    2. Collin says:

      What did I learn?

That I talk far too much crap and not enough about myself and my interests. Although, I suppose, all the things I post are things that interest me.

What does concern me is the lack of substance in many of my posts. I don’t really know what I can do about it, but I think I’ll have to try harder.

I score myself an F for the quality of writing on the blog.

Collin, my friend, don’t be so hard on yourself. You do great work and I enjoy what you write, when you do stay focused. ;-)

Since you’ve given yourself a low grade, I hope you are inspired to do better, whatever that means for you, and keep on keeping on. You help so many people and you’ve helped me a lot. Thank you!

      And don’t underrate yourself!
