A Dissatisfied Finch

On June 30, a little over a month away I will have been using Wordpress as my blogging tool of choice for one year.

I have used, abused, broken and fixed the blog a number of times since then and I am generally happy about the way the site runs and looks. In my second post I said “Damn this is some hot shit!” about the application and I still firmly believe that is true. Wordpress is quite simply the best blogging application on the market. Best of all it’s free!

However, in the very same post I said

Cornell Finch seemed to become some dodgy little website where I posted anything to make it look like I was using and updating the site.

I’ve just spent a couple of hours wandering back through the archives for the blog and I have realised something. Nothing changed. Yep, I went to wordpress, found a nice theme, started a photo blog, helped a couple of other people start their blogs, wrote and modified a couple of themes and enjoyed the whole blogging experience. What I am still doing though is posting any old bullshit that a reader can find anywhere on the net. Hell, it seems that’s where most of my content comes from recently.

It’s all generic bollocks about nothing in particular. I don’t exactly know what I’m going to do about it at the moment, but I have a couple of ideas:

  1. Only write about things that affect or interest me directly. My opinions (even if they aren’t important to the rest of the world), feelings, activities.
  2. Try my hardest NOT to write about what everyone else is writing about.  Or should I?  Dunno….
  3. Modify the current theme so it looks right.
  4. Change the tag line of the blog.  Any suggestions?
  5. No be afraid to rant because it might upset people.  I am so guilty of doing this it’s untrue.  There’s so much I want to rant about, especially the Mini Club right now, I should just get on and get it off my chest.
  6. Stop writing altogether and just move the photo blog over here.
  7. Find a way to hide the UTW tags that appear at the bottom of every post.  I want to keep them as (maybe mistakenly) it brings a little bit of traffic to the site but I think they look so fucking ugly that they distract the reader (me included) from the text of the post.

Number 6 may not happen, but at least one of the above will happen, or something else altogether.  I don’t know, I’ve just got to do something before I go insane!

With number 1 in mind, Eric Setiawan (check out his cameraphone photos – awesome stuff!) post a link to the basics of photography.  The site is based around the use of Canon 35mm cameras, but the basics are all the same.

I might write some pages on the very basics that someone could use even if they’ve never picked up a camera before.

UPDATE: Well, the Tags thing was easy enough to solve! Just tell the Ultimate Tag Warrior (UTW) not to automatically display the tags! Apparently though I also need to have a look at why the numbered lists (OL) are displaying outside the content wrapper. Or not…
