What is “British”

Over on ePhotoZine there’s an interesting discussion on what is British. It started with:

In Portugal we mention something or someone as being “british” if it’s stylish or elegant, however, lager, fish and chips, blackpool and the picture of the dogs playing snooker is more my idea of what “british” is all about… I ask the natives what is, for you, true britishness!

In the best answer so far has to be

Being British is about driving in a German car to an Irish pub for A Belgian beer, then travelling home, grabbing an Indian curry or a Turkish kebab on the way, to sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.

And the most British thing of all? Suspicion of anything foreign.

To me British is the description posted in the question. I am English. Not British, Welsh or Scots and no-fucking way am I European!

What does “British” mean to you either as a native or as a foreigner looking at the British?

    hmmm… interesting question…
When I think of the term “British”, as someone who has never been outside of North America, I automatically think of London. I know there is much more to the country than one city, but that is where my mind goes…
Also, I think of a style of humor when I hear that word. A very dry sense of wit comes to mind that I find to be hilarious…

So for me, as a fairly standard American it comes down to a city and a type of humor… that’s pretty sad, I need to start traveling…
